Warbirds has been based on Graphic Simulation Corporation's Hornet graphics engine for over a year and when GSC upgraded Hornet to v3.0 and included rolling terrain, the implementation of that feature in Warbirds wasn't too far behind.\line \line In addition to rolling terrain, Warbirds v2.0 will feature several new aircraft, including the Spitfire MkI, two versions of the Messerschmidt Bf110, two version of the Hurricane (the MkI and MkII), the Bf109E "Emil", and the Grumman/Eastern TBF/TBM Avenger. Also on the docket for upgrade will be an improvement to iMOL's MEGAvoice technology that allows players to talk to a limited number of other players while flying. Sun glare and some other effects have also been added.\line \line Warbirds v2.0 will feature a free Macintosh arena for an undisclosed amount of time after release. The development of the Mac version is a little bit behind schedule from the PC version, and iMOL will offer this arena to work any final problems out of the Mac version before going "live". Mac users will be able to fly in the "main" arenas as well, but iMOL is offering this free arena in case any problems crop up.\line \line On tap for upcoming versions of Warbirds for the Mac is 3Dfx (Power3D) support, manned gun emplacements, tanks, PT boats, and a host of other fun stuff. \line \line For more information and a full list of v2.0's features, see iMOL's web site. \line \line http://www.imagiconline.com/\line \line \line \f0\b0\i0\outl0\shad0\fs20 \cf0 \expan0 \ul0 We REALLY need a QuakeWorld client for the Macintosh\f0\b0\i0\outl0\shad0\fs20 \cf1 \expan0 \ul0 \line At work, I have both a PC and a Mac on my desk. I am a very loyal Mac fanatic, but for the past year, I have been very thankful to a Windows machine on my desk for one reason: Quake. I have been an avid Quake player since it first came out on Windows. All of my Quake playing had been done online.\line \line I was *REALLY* looking forward to the day that Quake was released on the Mac. The very first thing that I did when I got it was to hop on the Internet for some multiplayer Quake. I was pretty disappointed by MacQuake's Internet performance when I first played it, but I soon realized that this was only because I was used to playing QuakeWorld.\line \line I went back and did some tests. I compared MacQuake to standard DOS Quake, and found that they both gave equally poor Internet performance. I then compared to standard DOS Quake to QuakeWorld. The difference in incredible! QuakeWorld gives MUCH better Internet performance over the exact same connection.\line \line I don't think many people realize how much a difference it really makes until they actually try it.\line \line What Is QuakeWorld? The full description can be found on Quakeworld.net:\line \line "QuakeWorld is an Internet multi-player specific version of Quake. While the original version of Quake can be played over the Internet, many users modem users - the majority of players, had less than satisfactory play. Symptoms like excessive lag - actions actually happening much later than you did them; packet loss - the game would freeze and resume several seconds later; and various other difficulties plagued users. \line \line "After realizing how many people played Quake on the Internet, and how many wanted to, but couldn't due to the play being unsatisfactory, John Carmack of id Software decided to create a version of Quake that was optimized for the average modem Internet player. This Internet specific version does only 1 thing, play deathmatch games over a TCP/IP network such as the Internet. It has no support for solo play, and you can't do anything with out connecting to a special server.\line \line "Now in it's second generation, QuakeWorld has been sculpted by countless hours of user feedback and tweaking to provide the best multi-player experience that can be had from the equipment the average gamer will have. All that is required to use QuakeWorld is registered Quake, and one of the installer files off the QuakeWorld site."\line \line There is really only one thing that I see as a major road-block to getting QuakeWorld ported to the Mac: It is freeware. Not many people would be willing to work on it if they aren't going to get paid for it. This might be less of a problem if the Mac version was shareware, to help recover some of the development costs.\line \line Is there anything that we (as loyal Mac users and Quake players) can do to help get QuakeWorld ported to the Mac? Is there anyone out there who might be willing to spend time working on a Mac QuakeWorld port?\line \line John Carmack has turned the Windows QuakeWorld source code over to a third party to maintain and upgrade it. If a person or team was found to work on the Mac port, what are the chances that they could get their hands on the source code to MacQuake and Windows QuakeWorld? \line \line quakeworld: http://quakeworld.net/\line id: http://www.idsoftware.com/\line \line \line \f0\b0\i0\outl0\shad0\fs20 \cf0 \expan0 \ul0 New Shareware Game\f0\b0\i0\outl0\shad0\fs20 \cf1 \expan0 \ul0 \line Sevensquare has recently announced the Mac release of their shareware title, "Swap 'em Over," a puzzle game with a character all its own. \line \line System requirements are:\line \line Power Macintosh with at least 2 MB of free RAM\line Display capable of showing 256 colors in 640x480 pixels or larger\line 1 MB of free hard drive space\line \line The demo, containing 3 of the 40 levels and 1 of the 5 music files is now available. \line \line http://www.sevensquare.com/\line feature page: http://www.sevensquare.com/products_swap.html\line download: http://www.sevensquare.com/swap-em-over-151.hqx\line \line \line \f0\b0\i0\outl0\shad0\fs20 \cf0 \expan0 \ul0 MacSoft Reports Big Sales\f0\b0\i0\outl0\shad0\fs20 \cf1 \expan0 \ul0 \line We reported back in July about the success story that was the Mac release of Duke Nukem 3D. Many retailers noted to MacSoft how pleased they were with the game's performance.\line \line Now, there is even better news. According to MacSoft president, Peter Tamte, retailers report that the MacSoft's port of Civilization 2 has sold 75% more units than Duke did in its first two weeks. \line \line If the trend continues, Civ2 will be a huge hit for MacSoft and a victory for all of us.
